Picture Book Typography, Cover Design & Interior Layout

What makes a book flow together? What makes a reader want to turn the page? Do page turns hold suspense as a child anticipates what happens next in the story?

My passion is storybooks and I am dedicated to helping Indie Authors who are trying to produce their own books and need a human being to help them with their projects.

Before completing my MFA in Picture Book Writing & Illustration from Hollins University, I worked as a Graphic Designer for 15+ years, for local magazines, publishers , broadcast news and even in a marketing communication department.

I first worked for a magazine, while still in undergrad for my communications BA, my job was to lay out the pages with information, text and photographs. Later, during my MFA on picture books, I learned even more techniques for having a picture book with exciting changes in the story represented by page turns of anticipation.

The planning process is part of the design & illustration. Tiny, hand drawn thumbnails help an illustrator decide how your book’s illustrations will flow

Using Text as an illustration element and placing the story text inside of the illustration is another fun technique which can be used in your picture book.

Are the pages one giant illustration? Do the pages have an illlustration on one side and text on the other?

As a visual artist I have created artwork for illustrated kids books, yet I also love photography as a medium. Creating fantasy book covers from elaborate fantasy photo shoots is something that I find particularly intruiging.

If you want to guarantee that you have the most unique and original book cover, then work with me. For Fantasy stories I work with models to put together an entire on-location styled fantasy photo shoot to get completely original photographic imagery for your cover. In addition to doing graphic design, I have been creating with Fantasy Photo Shoots for 10+ years. This process guarantees original, human-created artistic images for your cover. No one else will have an accidental duplicate of your cover art from using stock imagery, since its a unique photo shoot.
